What: Due to inclement weather expected over the weekend, Baltimore County's 2010 Black Saga Competition scheduled for Saturday, February 6, has been rescheduled to its snow date of Saturday, February 13. At the Black Saga Competition, an audience of family and friends cheers on three-member teams representing 39 elementary and 14 middle schools as each team competes in the systemwide 2010 Black Saga Competition for Baltimore County Public Schools. Board members James Coleman, Ramona Johnson, and Mary-Margaret O'Hare are scheduled to present competition awards along with Black Saga founder Dr. Charles Christian.

A new feature of this year's finals will be a Black History Month fair showcasing displays from area museums promoting all of their public programs. Participating institutions will include Benjamin Banneker Historical Park & Museum, The Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History and Culture, National Great Blacks in Wax Museum, Historic Ships in Baltimore, The Maryland Historical Society, The Maryland Humanities Council, and The Walters Art Museum. In addition, the BCPS Parentmobile and Census 2010 will be represented.

Background:
Initiated by Dr. Charles Christian, author of Black Saga: The African American Experience, the Black Saga Competition challenges students to answer more than 800 questions about the African American experience.

Participating in this countywide competition helps prepare students for success in the upcoming Maryland State Black Saga Competition in March. Teams from all participating elementary and middle schools are eligible to compete in the statewide contest.

For the past five years, since the inception of the competition, Baltimore County has fielded more teams than any other school district in Maryland. Baltimore County was also the first in the state to host its own countywide competitions prior to the state finals. Howard and Prince George's counties now also host countywide events.

Black Saga underscores that all races and cultures have been a part of American history. Black Saga also helps build study skills and discipline and strengthens community involvement.
